Ukraine, le réveil citoyen

In the wake of the Soviet Union's dissolution, the remarkably peaceful nature of this extraordinary historical episode was widely acclaimed. To a large extent, this was an illusion. Few historical events are as destabilizing as the collapse of an empire. The consequences of the Russian empire's dismantling have barely begun to unfold.

A succession of events has thrust Ukraine into the spotlight: Maidan, Crimea, Donbas, NATO, Europe, gas, war, Russia, the Baltic states, Europe, Eurasia, the United States, destitution, and refugee camps. A dynamic of secession is underway. A restructuring of the European landscape—from the Baltic states to the former Yugoslavia, from Ukraine to Eurasia—may also be in progress.
