Involved in the cause of Algerian independence since childhood, the author interviews the associates of her father, Yves Mathieu—a lawyer for the FLN who later served as an advisor to the first Algerian government.

She is trying to understand his trajectory: an early anti-colonialist who was very active in Algeria until his death in 1966 under murky circumstances.
