In May 2014, after completing the documentary film L’assassinat d’Ilan Halimi (The Murder of Ilan Halimi), Georges Benayoun proposed making a film based on the investigations and research conducted by teachers in 2002 and 2003 under the direction of Emmanuel Brenner—work summarized in the 2004 book Les Territoires perdus de la République (The Lost Territories of the Republic). This essay documented violent challenges to certain history and geography lessons, stemming notably from the erosion of values upheld by the Republic in the face of an Islamist offensive within the education system.

We knew this topic was timely: since 2002, the situation had deteriorated significantly, precisely because the diagnosis had not been understood at the time. More than a decade later, France 3 joins us in this film, which raises the essential questions of today.
